Veterans Home Project

Overview:

DCAMM is pleased to announce the opening of the Rhode Island Veterans Home located on 110 acres overlooking Mount Hope Bay in the town of Bristol. The Home is a state-of-the-art, 208-bed facility providing quality residential care to Rhode Island’s war veterans. The small-town design provides a ‘residential’ feel for some of the State’s Greatest Generation. The complex includes six residential ‘neighborhoods’, a large common area at its center, a dining hall, chapel, medical suite, library and an aqua therapy room. The neighborhoods are conveniently connected by enclosed walkways allowing residents access to all amenities no matter the weather. Equally as important are the smaller design elements including commemorative artwork, World War II maps, newspaper articles and other wartime items.

Some of the highlights of this project are as follows:
Seven buildings for up to 208 RI war Veterans to provide nursing and residential care, with private rooms and on suite restrooms.
Services also include social, medical, nursing and rehabilitation for all residents.
Demolition of the existing home will commence upon completion of construction.

Design Features:

The project features include a number of green initiatives:

Energy efficiency exceeding the State of RI code requirement by 20%.
Photovoltaic panels to provide a source for renewable energy.
Metering and monitoring of all energy used to confirm that efficiency goals are met.
Occupancy and daylight sensors to control lighting use.
Maximization of natural day light in occupied spaces.
Building insulation exceeding the State of RI code requirement by 10%.
Low flow plumbing fixtures reducing water use by 30%.
Automated hot water recirculating systems to optimize energy efficiency.
Building Commissioning to verify that Green Initiatives are met.
Utilization of native plant landscaping.
Lighting within the landscape and grounds to reduce light pollution and glare.
Preservation and relocation of the historically significant Rhode Island Veterans Home Tower in its entirety to a new location on site.
Recycling of 70% of the construction waste, exceeding the State of RI code by more than 20%.
Utilization of low VOC emitting materials for finishes throughout the complex.
