Independent Man Close Up

Independent Man Preservation Project

The Rhode Island State House is topped by The Independent Man, an 11-foot, 1,200-pound gilded bronze statue created by George Brewster and installed in 1899. Standing about 278 feet above the ground, it symbolizes liberty, self-governance, and Rhode Island’s independent spirit as the first colony to renounce allegiance to Britain in 1776.

Key restoration milestones:

  • 1975–1976: Removed for structural repairs and regilding ahead of the United States Bicentennial.
  • 2023–2024: Taken down after cracks were discovered in the marble base; restored with repairs and new gold leaf while displayed in the State House rotunda.
  • 2024 Reinstallation: Returned to the dome in April 2024 in conjunction with the 248th anniversary of Rhode Island’s declaration of independence.
